Thompson, Meriwether Jefferson, 1826-1876.

A native of Virginia, Meriwether Jefferson Thompson moved to Missouri in 1847. An ardent secessionist, he was elected brigadier general of the 1st Division of the Missouri State Guard in July 1861. During his battalion's operations in the swampy regions of Missouri Thompson became known as the "Swamp Fox of the Confederacy."
