Alfonso Koels was an amateur artist and writer from a wealthy Berlin family. He traveled extensively in the United States and Mexico, eventually settling in California.

Alfonso Koels was an amateur artist and writer from a wealthy Berlin family. He journeyed extensively from New Orleans across the Gulf of Mexico through Texas and the Southwest and Mexico in the 1850s.
