Mr A.R. Penfold worked as a research chemist between 1910 and 1920. Between 1927 and 1955 he was director of the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences of N.S.W. He also held positions in the Royal Society of N.S.W.; the Art Gallery & Museums Association of Australia & New Zealand and the Plastics Institute of Australia. His publications include "Eucalypts" and over a hundred papers on the chemistry of Australian essential oils. In 1956 he visited China as a member of an unofficial Australian cultural delegation headed by Professor C.P. Fitzgerald.

Chemist and museum administrator. Penfold joined the staff of the Technological Museum (later the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences), Sydney in 1919 as Assistant Economic Chemist and was the Museum's Director from 1927-1955. He conducted research into Australian essential oil yielding plants and also had an interest in plastics, their analysis and use.
