In the 1840s the Governor of New South Wales, Sir George Gipps, believed the colony had a great future, as did the Reverend Dr John Dunmore Lang. Dr Lang, an enterprising Presbyterian minister from Sydney, saw the potential of the Moreton Bay district, which in 1844 had a population of only 540 residents, and organised his party of "industrious and virtuous" migrants to populate and develop the area. He was particularly concerned that their devout evangelical faith would make an impact on the moral and religious needs of the district. As a result of one of Lang's immigration schemes, 630 immigrants, including George E Walker, arrived in 1848 - 49 in three ships - the Fortitude, Chaseley, and Lima.
