Charles Bartles was born in New Germantown, N.J., on March 18, 1801. After graduating from Union College in Schenectady, New York, he studied law at the office of Nathaniel Saxton in 1822. Bartles married Eliza Hart of Flemington in 1833 and had four children, Mary, William H., Charles Jr., and George. From his second marriage to Eliza E. Randall in 1846, following his first wife's death the previous year, he had two more children, Joseph and Margaret. Bartles was successful in real estate operations, integral to the construction of the Flemington Rail Road as well as its first president, and president of the Hunterdon County Bank beginning in 1858. He died on June 19, 1883.

Dr. William Hart Bartles, was the first son of Charles Bartles and his first wife, Eliza Hart. Dr. Bartles was born in Flemington and worked as a lawyer for one year before changing his profession. He was a staff member of the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane for several years and also practiced medicine privately in Philadelphia.

William Wetherill Hawke was a Flemington, N.J., dentist and prominent citizen. His wife, Elizabeth Bartles Hawke, was Joseph Bartles's daughter and the niece of William Hart Bartles. Dr. Hawke was born on September 11, 1864 in Blawenburg, New Jersey, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's dental school, and married Elizabeth Bartles in 1897. He was very active in the Flemington Presbyterian Church, Hunterdon County Y.M.C.A, and Hunterdon County Historical Society. He died on April 4, 1940.
