UCSD's Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences (CASS) is an interdisciplinary research unit which conducts research in the areas of astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmochemistry. The center was founded in 1979 due to the administrative needs of two research projects, the Faint Object Spectrometer mounted on the Hubble Space Telescope and the Gamma-ray Observatory. CASS is administered by a director and one to three associate directors. Margaret Burbidge was the founding director (1979-1988), followed by Laurence Peterson (1989-1994), and then Arthur Wolfe (1994-present).
