He was a private and sergeant, 6th Ohio Infantry Regiment; 1st lieutenant and captain, aide-de-camp and assistant adjutant general, 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, Army of the Ohio; aide-de-camp, Inspector General's Department, Army of the Cumberland; 1st lieutenant and captain, 18th, 27th, and 9th U.S. Infantry Regiments; major, 8th U.S. Infantry Regiment; lieutanent colonel, 7th U.S. Infatnry Regiment; colonel, 25th U.S. Infantry Regiment; and brigadier general, 1st Brigade, 1st Division, I (1st) Corps, and 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, VII (7th) Corps.
