Frost family.
Carleton Pennington Frost was born the son of Benjamin and Mary Brant, in Sullivan (NH) on 29 May 1830. He attended Thetford (VT) Academy, Dartmouth College (A.B. 1852), Dartmouth Medical School (M.D. 1856), and New York Medical College (M.D. 1857). He married Eliza DuBois and they had two children: Gilman DuBois and Edwin Brant. Dr. Frost set up practice in St. Johnsbury (VT) but soon enlisted as surgeon for the 15th Vermont Volunteers. After the Civil War, he practiced in Brattleboro (VT) with Dr. Gale for a few years. In 1868 he started his teaching career at Dartmouth Medical School while continuing his practice in Hanover (NH). He served at the Medical School as lecturer from 1868-70, as associate professor, 1870-71, and as professor, 1871-92. He was also secretary/treasurer of the school and then dean, 1874-96. He served as alumni trustee at Dartmouth, 1887-92, and was interim president, 1892-93. He sat on the trustees' committees on athletics, equipment, exigencies, and degrees. Dr. Frost died in Hanover on 24 May 1896.
Gilman DuBois Frost was born on 7 May 1864. He married Margaret Thurston (1862-1946); they had five children: Carleton Pennington, Thurston DuBois, Philip, Elisabeth (Larson), and Eleanor (Hurd). Gilman Frost attended Dartmouth College with his brother Edwin, both graduating in 1887. Gilman studied medicine at Dartmouth's and Harvard's medical schools, earning degrees from both schools in 1892. Dr. Frost spent his teaching career at Dartmouth Medical School while conducting his practice in Hanover (NH) His first appointment was as lecturer in anatomy, 1893-94. From 1894 to 1910 he was professor of anatomy. He served as professor of clinical medicine from 1910-37. Like his father, he served the school as secretary/treasurer, 1896-1904, and he served as secretary 1904-09. Dr. Frost died on 27 May 1942.
Edwin Brant Frost was born on 14 July 1866. He married Mary Elizabeth Hazard (1870-1955). They had three children: Katharine Brant, Frederick Hazard, and Benjamin DuBois. Edwin Frost graduated from Dartmouth College in 1887, he studied at the University of Strasbourg and Potsdam. After graduation, he was appointed instructor of physics and astronomy at Chandler Scientific Department at Dartmouth. He served as assistant professor of astronomy 1892-95 and as professor 1895-98. Concurrently he was the director of the Shattuck Observatory. He was professor of astrophysics at the University of Chicago 1898-1905. He left that appointment to become director of the Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay (WI) where he stayed until his retirement in 1935. Around 1920 he lost his sight but continued his research with the assistance of his wife and aides. Frost died on 14 May 1935.
