Buley, R. Carlyle (Roscoe Carlyle), 1893-1968

Buley was born in Georgetown, Ind. He attended Indiana University and taught high school history in Delphi and Muncie, Ind. before earning his Ph.D. in 1925. Buley taught history at Indiana University from 1925 until 1964. He won a Pulitzer Prize in 1951 for THE OLD NORTHWEST: PIONEER PERIOD, 1815-1840, and the Elizur Wright Award for his history of life insurance.

R. Carlyle Buley (1893-1968) was born in Georgetown, Indiana, and received degrees from Indiana University in 1914 and 1916. He earned his Ph. D at the University of Wisconsin in 1925, and was professor of history at Indiana University from 1925 to 1964, and emeritus professor from 1964 to 1968. Buley won the Pulitzer Prize in 1951 for his two-volume study, "THE OLD NORTHWEST: PIONEER PERIOD 1815-1840," which was published by the Indiana Historical Society.

Roscoe Carlyle Buley was born in Georgetown, Indiana on July 8, 1893. He received his A.B. from Indiana University in 1914 and his A.M. from I.U. in 1916. Before returning to school to get a doctorate, Buley spent several years teaching high school history in Indiana and Illinois and spent a year in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1925. He then returned to IU as an instructor in the History Department, becoming a full professor in 1944.

Buley spent 39 years teaching history at IU. He wrote many books during his tenure, with his two-volume work "The Old Northwest: Pioneer Period, 1815-1840, winning the Pulitzer Prize in history in 1951. Buley was the first native Hoosier to win that honor. He was a very dedicated teacher whose commitment was shown in the countless hours he devoted to his students. His door was always open to anyone who wished to stop in and ask questions or simply chat. He was recognized by the students for his dedication by being awarded two awards from the Sigma Delta Chi journalism society, the Leather Medal, 1952, for the professor who contributed greatly to the advancement of the university, and the Brown Derby Award, 1962, for the most popular professor on campus.

Buley retired from teaching in 1964. He died on April 25, 1968 in Indianapolis.
