Valerian (D. Trifa) was Bishop of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America which was received into the Russian Orthodox Metropolia in 1960. He led the Romanian Episcopate for many years, and represented the Church in the National Council of Churches. The Bishop was involved in much controversy and a long legal battle relating to the allegations of pro-Nazi activities in Romania. He gave up his American citizenship in 1980, retired from Church service in 1984, left the U.S. and lived in Portugal until his death.
