Brother George Feltes began flying lessons in 1929. He was the first Jesuit to be licensed to fly. Brother Feltes was assigned to the mission at Holy Cross for 23 years and spent four and a half years helping to build the Copper Valley School before moving to Fairbanks in 1959. Brother Feltes was the first person to fly a diesel engine aircraft across the United States, the first person to fly a dielel engine aircraft across Alaska and the first person to fly a diesel engine aircraft above the Arctic Circle.
