Maia Wojciechowska was born August 7, 1927 in Warsaw, Poland. She and her family left Poland during World War II, emigrating to the United States in 1942. She attended Immaculate Heart College in California from 1945-1946. Maia Wojciechowska worked as a translator for Radio Free Europe and later held a variety of jobs at various organizations. She published her first work for children, Market Day for Ti Andre, in 1952. In 1964, Maia Wojciechowska published Shadow of a Bull, a sensitively written story of a young boy in Spain who is torn by his desire to become a doctor and not a bullfighter like his father. The book was praised by critics for its style and characterizations and received the 1965 Newbery Award. Throughout her career, Maia Wojciechowska has written a number of books for juveniles, many dealing with the anxieties, suffering, and dangers of adolescence. Her books are noted for their empathy and sympathy for the characters, and Maia Wojciechowska's emphasis on the importance of values, especially courage and love. Her work also reflects her strong Catholic faith and is particularly evident in A Single Light and How God Got Christian into Trouble . Maia Wojciechowska has also written for adults, and has published many articles and reviews dealing with a variety of social, religious, and literary topics.
