Pennsylvania Railroad Company. Office of Chief of Freight Transportation.
The Office of the Chief of Freight Transportation was created on February 1, 1927, by dividing the duties of the former Chief of Transportation. The office was abolished on June 1, 1955, and replaced by the General Manager-Transportation.
The Chief of Freight Transportation was a specialized officer on the staff of the Vice President on Charge of Operations and was in charge of all facets of freight train operation, including car supply, freight stations and warehouses, and auxiliary motor truck services. In 1954 an Assistant Chief of Freight Transportation-TrucTrain Service was created to supervise the piggyback service that was inaugurated that year.
The first incumbent of the office was John F. Deasy (1927-1928), followed by J. R. Downes (1928-1934), James M. Symes (1934-1935), J. C. Rill (1935-1948), and Andrew F. McIntyre (1948-1955). McIntyre was "loaned" to the Army during the Korean War (1950-1952) and was replaced pro tempore by his assistant, A. F. McSweeney.
