Thomas Kent attended schools in Iowa City and earned a BS and MD from the University of Iowa. He served at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (1964-1966) before returning to the University of Iowa as a professor of pathology, specializing in gastrointestinal diseases and medical education. His interest in birds, bird observation and photographing birds dates back to 1942. He was active in the Iowa Ornithologists' Union, edited Iowa Bird Life from 1886-1889, and co-authored three books on birds in Iowa.
