Giddings was born in England. In 1864 the family settled in Jackson county, Iowa. Giddings remained in Jackson County where he worked as a farmer and taxidermist. He was one of the charter members of the Iowa Ornithological Association and published several articles for the Iowa ornithologist. He had an extensive collection of bird specimens which he kept in his home.
