Established at University of Texas in 1918 as the Southwestern Political Science Assn. Became Southwestern Political and Social Science Assn. in 1923 - then Southwestern Social Science Association in 1931. Oldest such regional assn. in the nation. Seeks to bring the social sciences together. It's mouthpiece, the SOCIAL SCIENCE QUARTERLY, is published jointly with the University of Texas at Austin. It holds annual spring meetings.

Founded in 1920 as the Southwestern Political Science Association, the name was later changed to the Southwestern Political and Social Science Association, and in 1931 became the Southwestern Social Science Association. The association promotes, cultivates and correlates the social sciences and their application to the solution of social problems, with particular reference to the Southwestern States. Disciplines included are: economics, geography, history, political science, international studies, Slavic studies, women's studies, urban and regional planning, anthropology and minoritiy studies.

Founded by members of the University of Texas at Austin's Department of Government in 1919, the Southwestern Political Science Association encompassed government, economics, and sociology before becoming the Southwestern Political and Social Science Association in 1923 and finally the Southwestern Social Science Association in 1931. Since that time, the organization has promoted interdisciplinary engagement between professionals and students in the social sciences, including economics, history, international studies, political science, social work, sociology, and women’s and gender studies. Since it’s founding, the association has hosted annual meetings to discuss recent scholarship and published research in the Social Science Quarterly .
