William Findlay Shunk was a civil engineer and author. He was born in Harrisburg, the son of future Pennsylvania governor Francis Rawn Shunk, and educated at Dickinson College. He became a civil engineer, and worked for numerous railroad companies. He wrote several books about his profession. His son, Francis Rawn Shunk, was a West Point graduate and member of the Army Corps of Engineers.
