Bancroft, Mary R.
Variant namesMary Bancroft, author and intelligence officer for the Office of Strategic Services, was born in Cambridge, Mass., in 1903, the daughter of Mary Agnes Cogan and Hugh Bancroft, later publisher of the Wall Street Journal. Bancroft studied at Smith College, and married Sherwin Badger; they had three children: a son who died in infancy, Sherwin Jr., and Mary Jane. Bancroft later married Jean Rufenacht, a Swiss businessman, and in the 1930s moved to Switzerland where she was analyzed by C.G. Jung. She subsequently worked for Allen Dulles in the Office of Strategic Services, and she was, for a time, his lover. She was divorced in 1947 and returned to the United States in 1953. Bancroft wrote for the Swiss press, was a translator and book reviewer, and published two novels, Upside Down in the Magnolia Tree and The Inseparables, and a memoir entitled Autobiography of a Spy. She was active in New York City politics, was a member of the Analytical Psychology Club of New York City, the C.G. Jung Foundation, and on the editorial board of Psychological Perspectives. She died in 1997.
