The Council on Appalachian Women (1976-1980) was organized after the National Advisory Council on Women's Educational Program met at Appalachian State University in 1976. Thirty-five participants formed the non-profit organization to work towards education, services, and research of women for the thirteen states of Appalachia. Sharon Lord spearheaded its creation. Organizational offices were in Mars Hill, North Carolina and in 1977, the organization was incorporated as the Council on Appalachian Women. In 1979, CAW received a three year $54,630 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission. A primary project was a series of educational forums held in western North Carolina between 1978 and 1980. In 1981, offices closed due to lack of funding and the records were transferred to the official Repository at Archives of Appalachia at ETSU.
