Dr. Joseph F. Volker was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, in 1913. He served as the first dean of the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in Birmingham, Alabama, from 1948 to 1962 and later held the Medical Center positions of director of research and graduate studies from 1955 to 1965, vice president for health affairs from 1962 to 1966, vice president for Birmingham affairs from 1966 to 1968, executive vice president from 1968 to 1969, president of UAB from 1969 to 1976, chancellor of the University of Alabama System from 1976 to 1982, and distinguished professor of UAB from 1982 to his death in 1989.
