Charles Poor Kindleberger was born in 1910 in New York City. He received his A.B. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1932, and married Sarah Bache Miles in 1937. He received his Ph.D. in 1937 from Columbia University. He worked as a research economist for the Federal Reserve Bank, New York, and for the Bank of International Settlements, Basel, Switzerland during the 1930s. From 1940 to 1942 he was a research economist with the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington, D.C. In 1942 he began work as an official in the Research and Analysis Branch of the Federal Reserve. In February 1943 Kindleberger began work in the Office of Strategic Services in Washington and in March 1943 was on Detached Service from the OSS with the Enemy. In June 1944 he began work in the Objectives Unit of the Economic Warfare Division at the U.S. Embassy in London, England. From July 1944 to June 1945 he was on Detached Service from the OSS with the intelligence section (G-2) of the 12th Army Group in the European Theater. From June to November 1945 he was an Adviser in the Office of Finance and Development at the U.S. Department of State, and from November 1945 to June 1947 he was Chief in the Division of German and Austrian Economic Affairs. From April to May 1947, he was on assignment to the U.S. Delegation to the Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting in Moscow, Russia, and from June 1947 to July 1948 he was an adviser with the European Recovery Program at the U.S. Department of State. From 1948 to 1981 he worked as an Economics Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
