The Consortium for Assistance to the University of Petroleum and Minerals was organized in 1971 by Princeton University. The consortium was made up of several American universities which, through committee representatives, would take part in yearly visits to the University of Petroleum and Minerals in Saudi Arabia to evaluate and advise on academic and administrative matters. Princeton's representatives included University Librarian William S. Dix and Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Sciences chair David C. Hazen. Though the mission of the Consortium was ostensibly altruistic in nature, president Robert F. Goheen was criticized for signing the Consortium agreement by some who saw involvement in Saudi Arabia as being outside of the University's mission.
