Thomas Ellis, a surgeon from Caerwys, Flintshire, was the father of Dr Rowland Ellis, Bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney. He was particularly fond of competing in Eisteddfodau, although, on the whole, he was unsuccessful. He entered four compositions in the Aberffraw Eisteddfod in 1849, and four in the Rhuddlan Eisteddfod in 1850.
