Gathered in 1842, the Mount Vernon Congregational Church called Edward Norris Kirk, evangelist, as its first minister; in the 20th century, church moved to the Back Bay area and turned its attention to male college students, especially those attending M.I.T., and female office workers; Carl Heath Kopf, minister from 1933-1948 made great use of the radio and church prospered after World War II; later many families moved to the suburbs and in 1970 merged with Old South Church; has no building today but meets annually on financial matters.
