Lillian Kilbourne Smith was the daughter of James Gilliam and Almena Leonora Perkins Kilbourne. She attended Goucher College and Johns Hopkins, and taught at Silliman Female Collegiate Institute, Clinton, Louisiana. She married Eldridge Smith of Mississippi.
