She was known in literary circles in England and the United States, and was a particular favorite of Edgar Allan Poe.

Frances Sargent Locke Osgood (1811-1850), a poet and author, was born in Boston and achieved notoriety in London and New York. She was married to Samuel Stillman Osgood (1808-1885), a portrait painter. They had three children: Ellen Frances, May Vincent, and Fanny Fay. All three died in early childhood. In addition to her literary contributions, during this period of sentimental, lyrical "women's" literature, Frances Osgood is also known for a "literary courtship" with Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) and she was reportedly the inspiration of some of his poetry.
