Maass had emigrated to the U.S. in 1939; at the time of the correspondence he was teaching German literature at Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Mass. He included works by Werfel in a course he taught on modern German literature. After Werfel's death he apparently had a friendly relationship with Alma Mahler and visited her at some point in New York.
