Silas Martin (1841-1906) was born and raised in Westerville, Ohio, a small community north of Columbus. He studied with noted portrait painter John H. Witt, who is remembered for the numerous Ohio governors' portraits he painted. Martin served as head of the art department at The Ohio State University from 1898 until 1906. One of his most famous and devoted pupils was fellow Ohioan George Bellow.

Joseph Hooker (1814-1879) was born in Hadley, Massachusetts. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1837 and served in the Mexican War. He was a career Army officer and became a major general in the Union Army during the Civil War. He is best remembered for his defeat at the hands of Confederate General Robert E. Lee at Chancellorsville in 1863. He married Olivia Groesbeck of Cincinnati after the war. He died in 1879 and is buried in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati.

Emilius Oviatt Randall (1850-1919) graduated from Cornell University in 1874 and later received his law degree from The Ohio State University. In 1894 he became the secretary of the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society, which is now known as the Ohio Historical Society. In 1895, he was elected reporter of the Ohio Supreme Court. Randall wrote many books on historical topics, as well as articles for the Ohio Archaeological and Historical Quarterly, for which he served as editor.

Josephine Klippart (1848-1936) was a painter and illustrator who specialized in the scientific illustration of Ohio's fishes and birds. Her drawings appeared in publications of the Ohio State Board of Agriculture, an organization for which her father John Hancock Klippart served as secretary. Klippart, who founded the Columbus Watercolor Society, left her teaching position at the Columbus Art School to take charge of the coloring of folio-sized lithographs for the book "Illustrations of the Nests and Eggs of the Birds of Ohio." The white lace dress that Josephine is shown wearing also belongs to the Ohio Historical Society (H 24918).

General George H. Thomas (1816-1870), also known as the "Rock of Chickamauga," earned the nickname for his leadership during the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863. He served in the Mexican War and taught at West Point. Although he was born in Southampton County, Virginia, Thomas stayed loyal to the Union during the Civil War.
