G. Irving Gavett (1868-1941) was a professor of mathematics at the University of Washington (1907-1941), where he authored a popular textbook, First Course in Statistical Method (1925). Born in Sandstone, Michigan, Gavett trained in civil engineering at the University of Michigan. He taught at Fairmont College in Wichita, Kansas (1899-1904), Stanford University (1904-1905), and Cornell University (1906-1907) before joining the University of Washington faculty. He was an early member of the Mountaineers and appears to have met his future wife, Cora Mae Hall, a former University of Washington student and school teacher, through his activities with that organization. The couple, who married in California in 1921, also traveled extensively.
