Charles Humphries earned his B.A. from McMaster University, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He joined the staff of the Department of History at UBC in 1966, where he taught Canadian history. In addition to his academic activities, he was very active in the preservation of historic sites in British Columbia and across Canada. He was a longtime supporter of the Vancouver Historical Society and the British Columbia Historical Federation. Through the 1980s and early 1990s he was an active member of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, and the B.C. Provincial Heritage Advisory Board. A good part of Humphries research focused on the recruitment of Canadian machinists to work in British munitions factories during World War I and the lives of Canadian miners. Other research interests included BC society during WWI, the Machine Gun Fund, and letters from the front. Humphries died on June 18, 2005.
