The Society of Jesus, a Roman Catholic religious order of priests and brothers known as Jesuits, founded in 1540 by St. Ignatius of Loyola. The New England Province of the Society of Jesus was established as a dependent region of the Maryland-New York Jesuit Province in 1921. It became independent in 1926. Comprised of the six New England states of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine, it engages in various spiritual, pastoral, social, educational, and missionary ministries.
