Thomas E. Jewett, a native of Salem, Mass. and a machinist by trade, enlisted Sept. 1, 1862, and was mustered in as a sergeant in Company E of the 48th Massachusetts on Sept. 19. The 48th Mass. participated in General Nathaniel Banks's Louisiana Expedition, the focus of which was the capture of Port Hudson. Jewett was wounded in the campaign for Port Hudson on May 26, 1863, and sent to Baton Rouge to convalesce. The 48th Mass. was mustered out Sept. 3, 1863.
