Joseph Pownall, from Hackettstown County, New Jersey, was trained as a physician in New York City. After living in several locations in the southeast U.S., he traveled overland to California in 1849 to search for gold. In 1852 he aquired an interest in the Tuolumne Water Company. In 1857 he married Mary C. Newell and they had two children: Jospeh B. (Benny) and Lucy A. H. (Daisy).
