Born in Dover, Del., George Sykes was a career U.S. Army officer and a general in the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War. In the early days of the Civil War Sykes served as division commander of the Regular Infantry Battalion, participating in the battles of Fredericksburg, Antietam, and Chancellorsville. He was later made a major general and fought in the battle of Gettsyburg as head of the V Corps. After the war he reverted to the rank of lieutenant colonel and commanded at a number of duty stations around the U.S. until his death at Fort Brown in Texas.
