Planter of Charleston and Beaufort County, S.C.; member of Secession Convention, 1860-1862; son of Gov. Henry Middleton (1770-1846) and Mary Helen Hering Middleton (d.1850); one of twelve children, including brothers Henry Middleton (1797-1876), Arthur Middleton (1795-1853), and John Izard Middleton (1800-1877; husband of Susan Pringle Middleton (d.1900); father of Henry Middleton (b.1851) and Elizabeth Middleton Heyward.

Son of Governor Henry Middleton. Williams Middleton served as a diplomat to Russia for many years and later made his home at Middleton Place on the Ashley River. He was a member of the Secession Convention and during the Civil War he supplied laborers and materials for Fort Sumter and other Charleston defenses.
