English family with connections in South Carolina, Jamaica, and elsewhere. Julines Hering (1732-1797) of Heybridge Hall (England) was a soldier and an owner of sugar plantations in Jamaica. In 1761 he married Mary Inglis, and their children included Julines Hering (b. 1767), Oliver Hering (b. 1768), and Mary Helen Hering (1772-1850), who married Henry Middleton (1770-1846), a U.S. diplomat and Congressman, South Carolina legislator and plantation owner, and governor of South Carolina. Middleton served as the U.S. foreign minister at the court of St. Petersburg (Russia) during the 1820's.
