The Pittsburgh Public Schools began operating as an official institution in 1835 with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania acting in a supervisory role. In 1855, the city took over total control and established a Central Board of Directors representing the schools in each ward. This system remained until 1911 when a court appointed board of 15 managers oversaw the daily functions of the schools. This method of management came to be recognized as a model for other cities. The Pittsburgh Public Schools went through major building booms to keep up with a growing enrollment during the 1930s and 1940s.
