Pittsburgh Public Schools
The Pittsburgh Public Schools began operating as an official institution in 1835. Each ward in the city had its own board until 1911 when a court appointed board of 15 managers oversaw the daily functions of the schools. The Pittsburgh Public Schools went through major building booms to keep up with a growing enrollment during the 1930s and 1940s. Student integration was the primary activity for the school system through the 1960s and 1970s.
