Stanley Weintraub was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 17, 1929. He earned a bachelor's degree in education at the West Chester State Teacher's College in 1949. He received his master's degree from Temple University "in absentia" because he was called to duty in the conflict in Korea two months prior to graduation. He spent two years in the Eighth Army where, as a first lieutenant, for his wartime service, he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Korean Ribbon with five battle stars. After the war, he completed a Ph.D. in English at Penn State, with an emphasis on Victorian literature, and joined the Penn State Department of English on September 1, 1956, as an instructor. He became a full professor in 1965, a research professor in 1970 and an Evan Pugh professor in 1986. His doctoral dissertation on Bernard Shaw was the beginning of a notable series of writings on prominent and controversial English literary figures of the late 1800s, including George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, James McNeill, and Aubrey Beardsley. During his career, Weintraub edited Shaw's diaries and his autobiography and since 1956 has been editor of the Shaw Review. Weintraub retired in 2000 as an Evan Pugh Professor Emeritus and lives in Newark, Delaware.
