Appointed to U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1923 and rose to Lt. Commander serving on vessels in the U.S.., Alaska and Philippines (1924-38). Technical advisor to 1st Observation Battalion, U.S. Field Artillery (1939), lead U.S. delegation on gravimetric observation to Peru and Columbia (1940-41). Assigned as Major in Air Force and worked on weather research and mapping (1941-42). Performed work in geodesy on the SHORAN system (1945); promoted to Colonel (1946). Returned to the Geodetic Survey (1947-58); worked as consultant for Aero Service, inc. (1958-69).

Carl I. Aslakson was a United States (U.S.) soldier. He was with the South Dakota Infantry on the Mexican border (1914-1915), joined the U.S. Marine Corps (1917), and became a 2nd lieutenant by the end of WWI (1917-1919). Most of his WWI duty was in Cuba. He was appointed to the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1923 and rose to lieutenant commander serving on vessels in the U.S., Alaska, and Philippines (1924-1938). He became a technical advisor to the 1st Observation Battalion, U.S. Field Artillery (1939), and lead a U.S. delegation on gravimetric observation to Peru and Columbia (1940-1941). Askalson was then assigned as a major in the Air Force and worked on weather research and mapping (1941-1942); performed work in geodesy on the short-range navigation (SHORAN) system (1945); promoted to colonel (1946); returned to the Geodetic Survey (1947-1958); and worked as consultant for Aero Service, Inc. (1958-1969).
