Prior to 1900, indivdual botany courses occasionally appeared in the University of Washington catalog. In 1900 the botany department was formally established with H.R. Foster serving as Chair and the sole faculty member. Science Hall (now Parrington Hall) was constructed in 1902 and the third floor, complete with lecture hall, lab space, and an herbariium, was reserved for the Botany Department. In 1904, the department jointly established the Puget Sound Biological Station (now Friday Harbor Laboratory) with the Department of Ecology. Master's degrees were first awarded in 1910 and the first doctoral degree was awarded in 1920, followed by a move into Johnson Hall in 1930. In February 2003, the Department of Botany merged with the Department of Zoology and the undergraduate Biology program to form the Department of Biology.
