Katzenellenbogen, Adolf, 1901-1964
Variant namesAdolf Katzenellenbogen was an art historian and professor of Fine Arts, The Johns Hopkins University.
He was born, August 19, 1901 in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. He earned the doctor of jurisprudence degree, University of Giessen (1924) and the Ph. D. degree (1933) from the University of Hamburg. He taught at Vassar College from 1940 until 1958 when he came to Hopkins as a full professor and department chairman. Katzenellenbogen was a specialist in the late Medieval and early Renaissance periods. He was awarded the Charles Rufus Morey prize in 1959 for his published work, "The Sculptural Programs of Chartres Cathedral: Christ, Mary, Ecclesia." Adolf Katzenellenbogen died September 30, 1972.
