Howell Tatum (1753-1822) was an officer in the American Revolution and the War of 1812. He was also a merchant, engineer, and lawyer, and served as attorney general and superior court judge in Tennessee.

In the American Revolution Tatum fought with the First Regiment, North Carolina Continental Line, rising to the rank of major. He was charter member of the North Carolina Society of the Cincinnati.

Tatum migrated to Tennessee around 1788. Between 1793-1812 he engaged in general merchandising in Nashville. He was appointed by Andrew Jackson to be his chief engineer for the march toward Natchez in the War of 1812, and was appointed topographical engineer for Jackson's New Orleans campaign. He returned to the Nashville area after the war.

Tatum was the son of Joshua and Amey Tatum of Halifax County, N.C. He died September 9, 1822, in Nashville, Tenn.
