Tatum, Howell; born 1753, son of Joshua and Amey Tatum of Halifax County; died Sept. 9, 1822, Nashville, Tenn.; officer in the Revolution and War of 1812, merchant, engineer, lawyer, attorney general and superior court judge in Tennessee; fought with the First Regiment, North Carolina Continental Line; rose to rank of major; charter member of the North Carolina Society of the Cincinnati; around 1788, migrated to Tennessee; engaged in general merchandising in Nashville, 1793-1812; appointed by Andrew Jackson to be his chief engineer for the march toward Natchez in the War of 1812; appointed topographical engineer for Jackson's New Orleans campaign; returned to the Nashville area after the war

Howell Tatum ; Justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court from 1797 to 1798; born in North Carolina; soldier in the American Revolutionary War, serving as an ensign in the First North Carolina Regiment, Continental Line, in 1775; moved to Tennessee in the late 1780s or early 1790s, settling in the Metro District, which comprised Davidson, Sumner and Tennessee Counties; served as treasurer of the district from 1794 to 1796, and was then Attorney General for the district from 1796 to 1797; appointed to the state supreme court in 1797, resigning the following year; served as a topographical engineer in the War of 1812; interred with full military honors on September 9, 1822
