Renard, Mary Ann, 1921-

Hide Profile

Renard (b. 1921) was born in Marshfield, Wisconsin and graduated from Messmer High School in 1940 in Milwaukee.

She worked for the war effort for Boeing, Cutler & Hammer, International Harvester, and American Motors. In 1945, after the death of her first son, Renard joined the Women's Air Corps and became a medical and surgical technician. She treated burn victims and amputees returning from combat in the ortho, neuro, and plastic surgery ward at O'Reilly General Hospital in Springfield (Missouri). After a year there, Renard briefly left the military, but reenlisted because she missed hospital work. In 1953, she retired from the Air Force with the rank of corporal. After the wars, Renard worked as a waitress, then a press operator in a pasta factory, and finally as a letter carrier for the Milwaukee Post Office, where she worked from 1969 to 1982. Renard has been an active member of the American Legion since 1963, paving the way for women veterans to join the men's post. Her son, a Vietnam veteran, is a second generation Legion member.
