George Alfred Hill, Jr. descendant of an old Texas family, received a law degree from the University of Texas in 1911, and joined the Houston Oil Company in the 1920's. Eventually he became president of the firm, serving directorships and positions in various subsidiaries. His contributions helped Houston Oil, Houston Natural Gas, and Houston Pipeline leaders in the petroleum industry.

Hill was active in social, civic, patriotic and business organizations at the local and national level. He used his influence to gain advantages for the Texas petroleum industry, most notably when he prevented national regulation of oil production in 1938. He served on the Houston Water Department Advisory Board from 1937 to 1938, on the University of Texas Development Board from 1938 to 1949, and as a consultant to the framers of the Anglo-American Oil Treaty, 1944 to 1946. He was instrumental in the development of both the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and the San Jacinto Museum.
