Agent to the New York state commissioners of Indian affairs from 1788, state senator, lieutenant governor, acting governor, regent and chancellor.
While trading at Lake George and Oswego during the French and Indian War until 1771, Tayler became fluent in Indian languages and was involved in a number of Indian-white councils. Later a merchant in Albany, Tayler served during the Revolution in the provincial congress and in the state assembly.
