Montclair, N.J. (Essex County) physician, John J.H. Love (1833-1897), joined the Civil War first as a colonel in the 3rd Regiment Essex Brigade, and later (1862-64) as a surgeon in the 13th New Jersey Volunteers. He served at the battles of Antietam Creek, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Cumberland Gap and Williamsburg. Love returned to Montclair and was active in medicine and local politics until his death in 1897.
