Born in Berlin (1895) where he lived until joining the Army in World War I. After the war he was involved with various student relief organisations until 1931 when he went to England. He was interned there in 1940, was sent to Australia as an internee aboard the ship Dunera and sent to Hay internment camp and later to Tatura. After his release in 1943 he held a variety of jobs until his retirement.
