Berryman, James Thomas, 1902-1971

Berryman (1902-1971) was a political cartoonist for the Washington "Star" from 1923-1964.

James Thomas Berryman was a renowned Washington political cartoonist and journalist during the mid-twentieth century (1923-1964). He spent most of his career creating political and sport cartoons for the Washington Evening Star and Sporting News; following in the footsteps of his father, political cartoonist, Clifford K. Berryman. Jim Berryman also wrote and illustrated articles for various magazines and newspapers such as Look and the National Rifle Association. He won various journalist awards including the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for Political Cartoon of the year, the first son of a Pulitzer Prize winner to win the same award.

James Thomas Berryman was born in Washington D.C. on June 8, 1902 to Clifford Kennedy Berryman and Kate Gaddis Durfee Berryman. He attended George Washington University from 1920-1923 and the Corcoran Art School from 1921-1922. On October 23, 1926 he married Louise Marble Rhees and they had one son, Rhys Morgan Berryman. Jim Berryman died in Venice, Florida on August 12, 1971.
